Gift Ideas for Kitchen Lovers

July 12, 2010 – 7:05 pm

It sometimes seems as though the pursuit of gifts is endless, doesn’t it?  Well, actually, for many of us, it is.  After all, there are a host of occasions throughout the year when we’re in gift giving mode.  And there are also a host of different people in our lives that we need to buy those gifts for.

What to buy, what to buy, what to buy.  It can be an endless refrain.  Well, here are a few ideas that might be of help.  At least if you have someone on your gift list that loves to spend their time in the kitchen.

First off, kitchen appliances.  No, not a fridge or stove, but all those small appliances that make meal preparation so much easier.  And the best part is, there’s a huge selection to choose from.  Food processors, full size or mini.  Ice cream makers – yum!  Sandwich grills or waffle irons.  Blenders, big and small.  Espresso makers or a cool kettle.  Toasters, juicers and the list goes on.

Next, why not think about cookware?  Every chef knows the importance of quality pots and pans.  And again, you have a large selection to choose from.  Does your loved one have a favourite celebrity chef?  Chances are, they might have a line of cookware.  Or how about those who are environmentally conscious?  You can find eco-friendly cookware for them.

Speaking of celebrity chefs, how about one of their cookbooks?  Even though you can find the recipe for anything you want on the internet, there are still a lot of people that love to have good old fashioned hard cover cookbooks in hand.  And again, you can find a cookbook on just about any type of food  there is.

How about a quality knife?  You can choose from a variety of types from fairly inexpensive to something that can cost quite a bit of money, but a good knife is something that can last a long time.  And if you decide to go that route, you could round out the gift with a great cutting board and a knife sharpener as well.

Is that it?  No.  These few things that I have mentioned barely scratch the surface of what you can buy for a kitchen lover.  And think of this.  It’s said that there is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving.  If you give someone a kitchen gift, you may be on the receiving end of some culinary delight because of it.  How happy will that make you?

The Gift of Flowers

July 12, 2010 – 7:00 pm

If your mom really loves flowers, then by all means, gift her with a beautiful bouquet or arrangement.  But, as with any thoughtful gift, you need to make sure that you really put some thought into it, and that means not picking up a cheap posie when you stop for gas.  Just because many local gas stations are turning into one stop shopping spots, this does not mean it’s a good place to buy something as special as a gift for mom.

So, what to do?  Well, you need to shop around.  Take your time and discover your options.  In the case of buying flowers, going the local route is always the best thing to do.  Of course, that only works if you live close to your mom, or you’re going to be visiting when you make your purchase.  Walking into a florists may be a daunting prospect for some, but you’ll be glad you did it.  The florist will be able to advise you when it comes to a selection, and you’ll be able to see the product you are buying.  You’ll also be able to assure yourself that you’re getting what you’re paying for.  Fresh flowers, not wilting weeds.  Another plus is that local delivery may be more reliable if you are having them delivered instead of dropping them off yourself.  I do recommend dropping gifts off in person if possible.  Why miss out on sharing mom’s joy?

If the above is not possible because you and your mom did live close by, you do have distance options.  You can order flowers over the phone or online.  I would recommend online over the phone, as you at least should have the option of seeing some images of what you are ordering.  But a word of caution.  Not every business on the net is reputable, so try to find a well know florist.  Many have outlets across the country and offer guarantees.  Having that as a back-up is a good safety net in case something should go wrong.  Having mentioned national companies, please don’t take that to mean that bigger is always better.  Make sure you read the fine print and do your due diligence.  You can also look for reviews on the establishment you are thinking of using.  You may be better off looking for a florist close to where you mom lives, as well.

The other thing to consider is that you want to make sure someone will be home to accept the delivery.  Unfortunately, this may spoil your surprise!

Coffee Table Books – A Great Gift Idea

July 12, 2010 – 6:48 pm

For all that there is so much joy in finding the perfect gift and presenting it to someone you care about, there can also be a ton of angst involved.

What do you buy for the person that already has everything—or so it seems?  Or the person that has off the wall or eclectic tastes that are contrary to our own?  Or perhaps you’re a teenage boy trying to find the perfect gift for his elderly grandmother without having a clear sense of what kind of things and older woman would appreciate.

Face it; we’ve all been there before.  The grinding fear that the gift we choose for something will be something they won’t like.  So we think of resorting to cash or a gift card.

But how about a coffee table book?  Whether someone is a reader or not, they generally have some interests or hobbies.  Maybe they enjoy a certain sport.  Or the dream of visiting some specific geographic location.  Perhaps they are a collector of some sort. Whatever a person’s obsession is, there is generally a coffee table book that centers around the topic.

But what really is a coffee table book?  How is it different from any other book or novel?

Coffee table books are always in hardcover and usually measure in the area of twelve by ten inches, with a thickness between one and two inches.  Instead of being wordy, these books are visual, meaning they are crammed with captioned photos or illustrations of the topic.  They are to be left sitting out on a coffee table and provide something for guests to browse through, and are a great way to prompt conversations.

Even if someone isn’t big on entertaining, why not think of buying them a coffee table book on a subject they love?
